Downtown Rockmart will once again welcome little ghosts and goblins to safe Halloween fun during the Festival of Treats from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30.

Rockmart Business Alliance (RBA) will host this annual observance. The group has issued a call for additional donations of candy and/or other festival treats since Cedartown officials have decided not to hold a similar event for Halloween.

“We expect our crowd to be larger than past years,” said Kellie Taylor, president, RBA. “We appreciate all the support given to make this a safe and successful event for the children."

Highlighting the activities will be games such as bean bag or ring toss. Booths will line both sides of Marble Street for easy access by youngsters. Streets will also be roped off for safety of the children.

Ivy League Kids will sponsor a costume contest for kids, ages 0 to 12, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in front of the former Rockmart Police Department building. Categories will be age specific – 0 to 3 years, 4 to 7 and 8 to 12. Winners will receive ribbons and prizes.

Pets will parade in front of Precious Paws, South Marble Street, and will be judged for the best dressed. The event is not breed specific. Any size – two to 100 pounds – can enter the contest. Prizes will be awarded with $50, first place; $30, second and $20, third.

Officials announced that all dogs must be non-aggressive and on a leash.

Rockmart Fire Department is scheduled to participate and the high school band boosters are scheduled to sell hot dogs.

No admission will be charged and everyone is welcome to attend.

For more information, call Taylor at 770-684-2248.

I sure am glad the Cedartown kids have an alternative. Considering the proverty levels in Cedartown the short drive to Rockmart will keep many kids in Cedartown from a safe "Trick or Treat experience."
