A safety program called “Be Safe Be Spotted 2010” has been successful in promoting child safety over the summer, according to local police officials.

The program is sponsored by Safe Kids Polk County, who partnered with Cedartown, Rockmart and Polk County police departments.

Local uniformed officers gave prizes randomly to children seen using safety equipment or performing other safety actions, like properly crossing a street.

Officials said more than 1,500 prizes were given to local children.

The idea was to encourage Polk County children to use safety equipment, like bike helmets and car seats, and to promote awareness on safety with the younger crowd.

Safe Kids Polk County and police said they hope to make this an annual event.

Sponsors included: Safe Kids Polk County, Redmond EMS, Floyd EMS, Mercury Appraisal, Cedartown McDonald’s, Rockmart Optimist Club, Cedartown Kiwanis Club and Polk Family Connection.
