The man who was struck and killed by a train in Rockmart last Saturday has been identified as James Sanders, 67, of Rockmart.

Deputy Coroner Tony Brazier said he and police got the final results from the Georgia Crime Lab early this morning.

He said officials and the family were already aware the body was that of Sanders, but he and the police had to follow protocol and wait for the lab results.

“In a situation like this, especially when there is such massive trauma, you have to make sure,” Brazier said.

Police are still investigating exactly how Sanders, a retired truck driver, ended up lying on the tracks as the Norfolk-Southern train headed to downtown. He said he is meeting with Rockmart Police Chief Keith Sorrells today to discuss that issue.

“Right now, it appears it’s a very tragic accident,” Brazier said.

Visitation for the family is tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. at Freeman Harris Funeral Home. The funeral is Thursday at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in the Morning View Baptist Church Cemetery.
