The final school bell of the year is nearly here and kids will have a lot more free time on there hands.

Fortunately, a number of activities and camps are scheduled for the first part of summer that will give both parents and children opportunities to get out of the house when class is over on June 4.

First up is a pair of events centered around fishing on the banks of local watering holes aimed at providing kids with a day of fun.

The annual Polk County Kids Fishing Rodeo will take place Saturday at Kenview Farms off of Highway 113.

Sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources, children 15-years-old and under are welcomed to fish from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day will also feature free food and prizes.

On June 5, the City of Aragon and Davitte Lodge 515 will present Children’s Day at the Aragon Mill Pond from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Besides a fishing rodeo, there will be many games and other activities for kids ages 16 and under.

Rockmart Youth Soccer is holding a three-week camp beginning June 7 and continuing every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday through June 25.

Each session will run from 6:30-8 p.m. and provide fundamental instruction for children as well as a clinic for parents to help them better understand the sport. The camp will end with a send-off party on Friday, June 25.

Kids can register at Sew Purdy on the corner of Elm Street and Marble Street in downtown Rockmart. The cost is $50 per child for the first two children in a family and $35 for each child after that.

Three Rockmart High School athletic teams are presenting youth sports camps in the month of June, beginning with the volleyball team June 7-9.

Taking place from 6-8 p.m. each day in the high school gym, campers will learn sportsmanship, serving, offense and defense among other areas. The cost is $35 per participant and each camper will receive a shirt.

The Rockmart volleyball team earned a berth in the Class AA/A state playoffs last season.

Head coach Steve Luke and the Rockmart High School softball team will hold their eighth annual Youth Softball Camp June 21-24 for children 4-years-old and up.

Held at the high school’s softball field and hitting complex, the four-day camp will feature instruction from Luke and assistant coaches as well as members of the Region 7-AA champion Lady Jackets.

The team finished the 2009 season as the runner-up in the Class AA state tournament and Luke was named the Class AA Coach of the Year.

Cost is $45 for the first child in each family and $25 for each one after and includes a shirt. Instruction will be held from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. each day.

The Rockmart High School boys and girls basketball teams will hold the RHS Youth Basketball Camp from 6-7:30 p.m., June 21-24 in the school’s gym for children between the ages of 5-14.
