Bill Byrne, candidate for the District 2 seat of the Polk County Board of Commissioners, was disqualified by the Polk County Board of Elections at a special meeting held in the Polk County Administration Building on Tuesday, May 27.

Byrne qualified as a Republican candidate in April of 2008, but since then his residency was challenged requiring further investigation and the special hearing.

Byrne does retain the option to file an appeal with Polk Superior Court within the next 10 days.

According to the law, a candidate must be a legal resident in Polk County for 12 months to run for office.

Ken,

Because the hearing ran until nearly 5 p.m. on Tuesday, we couldn't get the article in for today's paper. However, a more detailed article will run in next Tuesdays paper with the correction.

To KenSuffridge,

This is Todd Ollis, the author of the article. I made a mistake in writing this article. One needs to be a resident in Polk County for 12 months to run for office, not six years. I apologize for my error.

6 Years!!!! Who ever wrote that legislation was doing some serious turf guarding. That is so 1950's it is obvious that is "good old boy" work at its best. Get a life legislators........there is an election in 6 months!!!!

Since further review by the Polk County Elections office at a SPECIAL MEETING that was held.Seems like they would have known of Mr. Burns residency at the time of pre-qualifying? How come is all the attention focused on him? Seems to me being a live long resident here in Polk county, I think maybe some other canidates records need to be evaluated by the Electors office for possible other violations that may have been over looked! Citizens Stand Up come Election time each Polk county voter needs to research each canidate and evaluate there values and concerns here in the county we live with OUR TAX DOLLARS!! I know I will before I vote!
