The Polk County Board of Commissioners has agreed to extend the lease agreements with John Mann, Fixed Base Operator at the Polk County Airport and the Atlanta Skydive Center for a period of 120 days.

Commissioners announced that since the leases are either expired or will soon expire this extension time will provide an opportunity to review future plans for the airport and the role to be played by providers of aeronautical services.

This decision comes after a vote not to renew the lease of Atlanta Skydive during the group’s January meeting. Following the January vote, delegates appeared at meetings, letters were written and petitions presented asking board members to change their decision.

No action was previously taken regarding the lease agreement, scheduled to end on April 7.

I think he or she is talking about those that fly in from the east and west coasts specifically to visit ASC using vacation they've saved, 3 or 4 times annually. As well as those that drive in from Nashville, Chattanooga, Cleveland, Atlanta, Florida, Knoxville (I can keep listing) on a regular basis specifically to visit and jump at ASC.

"If that is accurate..." First off it isn't accurate. The author never cited where he/she found the information, my guess is the DZ pays quite a bit more in taxes. Additionally, I'm sure the reporter neglected to factor the ancillary revenue for small business and taxes brought by those that visit from out of town and spend money at hotels, restaurants, gas stations, etc.

Maybe local County officials should have been aware that skydiving is a multi-million dollar operation and maybe they could have gotten more money. If the neighbors don't like skydiving then I can accept the decision of the officials if they were siding with constituents but they should at least tell the full story - tell the truth. I'm embarrassed to be represented by officials that will, over and over again, make statements that make no sense.

Why would you even consider what Stopskyride says when he/she keeps talking about City Commissioners. It's the County Commissars - the ones who sent a County revenue source (Sky Diving) in Polk County packing and announced that they were having to cut $500,000 from this year's budget. Chief Commissar Thaxton's announced reasoning was nonsensical - he said that the problem with renewing the lease was that some other private enterprise might want to locate on County land.I guess the problem would be that the Commissars would have to make a decision. I say bring on private enterprise and allow them to locate on any property where zoning and code requirements can be met.

What's the Skydiving got to do with the City Commissioners? I thought it was in the county?

Stopskyride must be one of those people who is concerned that something other than that predicted by "Chicken Little" will fall from above and land on one of his cows. There are two prominent issues associated with this matter: one is that neighbors don't like it and the second one is that we have County Commissioners who are too short-sighted regarding the welfare of the County.
