The Purks International Championship Wrestling has had some big, good matches over the past five months. But last Saturday in front of a crowd estimated at over 1,000 people, Purks perhaps had their best match.
That’s because Total Nonstop Action (TNA) World Heavyweight champion A.J. Styles was in Cedartown to take on his former tag team partner Air Paris. The two talented wrestlers went toe-to-toe for about 22 minutes, pulling off several high-flying moves and high-impact moves.
In the end, Air Paris picked up the win by disqualification when David Young and Purks Heavyweight champion Bobby Hayes interfered. Young and Hayes’ interference brought an end to perhaps the best match Purks has had this year.
But the excitement didn’t stop when Young, Hayes and Styles beat down Air Paris. Instead, the excitement was only beginning as Ron Simmons returned to The Purks to save the day.
Simmons, who officially retired from wrestling at February’s show, announced that he has been hired by Purks owner Byron Slaughter to be the new commissioner for Purks International Championship Wrestling.
Not only that, but Simmons said that next month – on April 10 – Young and Hayes would be in a tag team match against Air Paris and “Big Sexy” Kevin Nash. The nearly 7-foot tall veteran wrestler, who helped form the New World Order (NWO) in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in the 1990s, is a five-time WCW World Heavyweight champion and a one-time World Wrestling Federation (WWF) World Heavyweight champion.
In other matches it was the night of the bad guys.
Nigel, a bad guy, defeated Too Tall in a loser leaves town match, forcing fan favorite Too Tall to leave Cedartown. Simon Sermon upset new good guy John Arden while David Young kept his mean streak alive as he knocked off Shaun Banks.
Thunder and Lightning defended their Purks tag team championship belts against Alexander The Great and ‘The Rocker’ Terry Lawler. Alexander and Lawler brought out Hayes and instituted their own version of “The Freebird Rule” to beat Thunder and Lightning.
The Freebird Rule was originally established because of The Fabulous Freebirds and the fact that they had three members. Wrestling companies would allow any two of the three wrestlers to defend the tag team titles on any given night.
Last Saturday night, the trio of bad guys at The Purks took that rule to another level as all three wrestlers participated in the match, unofficially making it a three-on-two contest for the tag team belts. In the end, the three bigger, stronger guys proved to be too much for Thunder and Lightning and beat them for the belts.
In another big match, TNA Knockout Velvet Sky wrestled Purks Diva Tracy Taylor. While Velvet Sky may wrestle in the so-called big leagues, she was unable to defeat Taylor as the Hawaiian Princess recorded the upset victory.
But the night clearly belonged to Styles and Air Paris as the former friends collided in the ring and gave fans something to cheer about for over 20 minutes. The two fought inside the ring, outside the ring and defied the law of gravity with several high-flying, crowd-pleasing moves.
