The Cedartown Middle School baseball team opened their season Feb. 22 with a 7-2 win over Armuchee. The following week - this past Monday - they knocked off Pepperell 8-1.

“We have come out of the gate with some good notes,” Head Coach Jeff Collier said. “We beat Armuchee behind some good pitching. Our bats were slow but they fought for every run we got and made it stick.”

Against Pepperell, the young Bulldogs got some payback as they defeated the Dragons who had beaten them last year in the championship game.

“We had a little extra in the tank when we took the field,” Collier said. “And again, we won behind some good pitching and I think our bats are getting better.”

In the Armuchee contest, Collier said the team played well despite the weather.

“Outside of a couple of fielding errors, Armuchee doesn’t score,” Collier said. “That was the first game and the first time we saw live pitching and it was cold. Everything worked out and everybody that was eligible got in the game.”

Collier said he is trying to teach his team to play focused but to have fun doing it.

“I think the biggest thing that I’m trying to get across to them is little things like being focused, having fun, being a team player and giving the team what you are capable of giving. I’m not asking for a major league performance, just a great effort. If they do that consistently, they will have success.”

The Cedartown Middle School Bulldogs will play the Darlington Tigers on Monday in another league game.
