The final day of the annual Bernard Neal Middle School Tennis Tournament ended a day early Saturday.

Rain halted play on the final day of the event, sponsored by the Coosa Valley Tennis Association.

All the teams — Armuchee, Cedartown, Coosa, Model, Pepperell and Rockmart — had played each other in the regular season, so the results were determined by how the teams competed against each other in their last regular season matches.

The girls winner was Armuchee and the runner-up was Pepperell. Model won the boys division and Armuchee came in second.

Despite the rain, CVTA coordinator Bill Thornton said the tournament was a success.

“It went really, really well. We had great participation,” he said. “These middle school tournaments are always interesting because of all the parents and grandparents that come out.”

A banquet and awards ceremony was held in Hamler Gym.

The CVTA’s annual George Wallis Service Award was presented to Jack Zeiger. It was pointed out by Mike Burns, the presenter, that Zeiger worked tirelessly on the adult league state championship in 2007 which resulted in the Rome event being named tournament of the year by the GTA.

“We had around 300 people at our banquet and award ceremony and we didn’t even play,” Thornton said. “They still came out. I was really impressed.”

A certificate was presented to players from each school for most improved, best sportsmanship and most valuable.

Following are the award winners:
