According to the Georgia High School Association’s Web site, Cedartown High School has exercised their option to appear before the Reclassification Committee to appeal their region placement.

Cedartown will go before the committee on Wednesday, Dec. 16 and asked to be changed from Region 6-AAA to Region 7-AAA, sub-region ‘B’.

Currently Cedartown is scheduled to be placed in a region with schools as far away as Columbus starting in the 2010-11 school year.

If Cedartown is denied their appeal, they will be forced to travel round trip 260 miles to Columbus High School, 254 miles to Shaw High School, 160 miles to Troup High School and 156 miles to LaGrange High School. Carrollton, Central-Carroll and Haralson County are also in the new region, but each of those schools are within 78 miles of a round trip.

If the Georgia High School Association grants Cedartown’s appeal, then they will be moved into a sub-region with Cartersville, Allatoona, Gilmer County, Pickens County and Murray County. According to MapQuest, Gilmer County High School would be a 168 mile round trip, Pickens County High School 146, Murray County 138, Cartersville High School 62 and Allatoona High is just over 80 miles.
