A Cedartown patrolman’s extra effort in a burglary investigation leads to three arrests.

Richard Wayne Heffner, 18, of 45 Corn Road, Cedartown, Derrick Justin Baldwin, 18, of 396 Fairview Ave., Cedartown, and Christopher Ray Timms, 22, of Wieuca Way, Cedartown, all face a burglary charge stemming from a Nov. 8 incident.

According to Cedartown Police Department reports, Officer Jeremy Wilkes was the patrolman called to a burglary that Sunday occurring at 910 Main St., known as the old Al Brooks Chevrolet dealership.

The property owner, Byron Slaughter, reported two Yamaha dirt bikes stolen. Wilkes filed the report, but then he decided to follow up, according to Assistant Chief Jamie Newsome.

“Because of his investigation, he got information as to where the bikes were,” Newsome said, adding that someone had told Wilkes the bikes were in the basement of one of the suspects.

Newsome said the investigation was continuing, with another patrolman Officer Todd Wallace doing surveillance on the suspected house. Newsome said the officers then got information bikes were going to be moved.

That’s when the police did a traffic stop and recovered the bikes in the back of a truck pulling out of a suspect’s house. The three men were arrested on site, according to reports.

Newsome said Wilkes and Wallace represent an officer going beyond his duty of simply filing a report.

“That’s an officer being pro-active,” Newsome said. “We have many fine officers and this represents that.”
