The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is waiting on video evidence to complete the probe into an incident where a woman in custody allegedly attempted to steal an Aragon police car.

According to Aragon Police Chief Wayne Sanders, he talked with the GBI Wednesday regarding the Oct. 17 incident where Tina Poole Cobb, 36, of Rockmart, allegedly got out of handcuffs and attempted to drive off in a police car.

Sanders said the department had to send off the video to be “put back together” because it and the video camera where damaged when the car wrecked.

“There is just one part of the video he needs to see,” Sanders said.

Sanders voluntarily called for an outside investigation into procedures in arresting Cobb to ensure proper restraining standards were followed.

The incident happened around 11:30 p.m. when Sgt. Matthew Rook stopped a vehicle on Portland Road at Oakridge Drive on numerous traffic violations and a suspicion of DUI, police reports state.

According to reports, Cobb’s son, Alex Lamar Poole, 18, of 11 Lake Shore Drive, Leesburg, Ala., was driving with Cobb as a passenger. Rook arrested Cobb for obstruction after she reportedly became belligerent and interfered with his questioning of her son.

Aragon reports state Rook handcuffed Cobb and put her in the back of his patrol car while he continued to question Poole.

According to Rook’s statements in reports, Cobb escaped the handcuffs and found a way to the front of the Aragon police car. The officer then attempted to remove her, reports said.

It was then Cobb allegedly accelerated to a high rate of speed, striking both the officer and her son. Poole traveled around 25 feet on the police car hood before he fell to the ground, reports state.

Rook, who was still attempting to remove Cobb from the police car, was dragged until he released himself as Cobb sped away.

Reports state Rockmart police officers then pursued Cobb as she hit several mailboxes and a utility pole. The pursuit ended when Cobb hit a ditch on Portland Road and Jenna Drive, about a quarter of a mile away. Police then restrained Cobb, reports said.

Rook, Poole and Cobb sustained minor injuries.

Poole faces a charge of DUI under the age of 21. Polk County Jail docket reports list only one DUI refusal charge against Cobb. However, Sanders said many more are coming.

He said other charges would include aggravated assault on a police officer, theft of a police car, and criminal damage to government property among others.
