A hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday in the U.S. District Court in Rome for former Polk County Sheriff’s Office road deputy Kenneth Gravett, according to paperwork in the court.

Court paperwork said the hearing is to allow Gravett, 42, “to plea to information,” but doesn’t offer any clarification.

The hearing was scheduled after the court dismissed the wire and mail fraud charge against Gravett last week.

The documents state the complaint was dismissed “without prejudice.” According to a legal dictionary, that means charges may be brought again later if a defendant doesn’t follow through with the terms of the settlement.

Gravett, a 17-year law enforcement veteran, was arrested last summer after Sheriff Kelly McLendon called for an outside agency to conduct an internal investigation.

Gravett had filed insurance paperwork on a motorcycle he had reported stolen, which raised a red flag with the insurance company.

The original charges were filed July 1.

Gravett was re-arrested on an insurance fraud charge last month as part of a sting into a Polk County car theft ring. Nine were arrested as a part of that sting.

The nine included a Polk County police officer, another sheriff’s deputy, a Cedartown High School auto shop teacher, and several businessmen.

Records do not show if the later charge of insurance fraud was dropped as well. Court documents refer only to the charges initiated in July.
