GFC seeks arsonist following destruction of 61 acres near Mountain Home Rd.
Officials are looking for the person responsible for a Aug. 15 woods fire on Mountain Home Road which ended with 61 acres of timber destroyed.
Georgia Forestry Commission Chief Ranger Denise Coker said the fire was definately arson.
"The fire was arson and caused extensive damage to timber," she said.
Coker said Polk County Fire Department personnel had spotted the blaze across Mountain Home Road on their patrol of the area. Polk County Fire Stations 5 and 9, the Polk County Police Department and the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) all worked the fire, she said.
The GFC used two bulldozers to burn out fire lines and an all-terrain vehicle to help in scouting and patrolling.
Coker said timber wasn't the only thing threatened in the blaze. Four homes on Edge Road were threatened by the fire and the blaze caused an hour-long shutdown of Highway 100 while crews worked to extinguish the fire, she said.
