Cedartown City Commission meets tonight

The Cedartown City Commission meets at 7 tonight in the commission chamber at 201 East Ave., Cedartown.

The published agenda is as follows:

Delegations

A) Presentation by "Gift to the City" representatives, outlining a plan to get new signs on the corridors entering Cedartown;

B) Michael Atwater, requesting the use of the Bert Wood Youth and Athletic Complex by the Youth Football Tournament, on Aug. 22-23;

C) Ruth Worthington, requesting an amendment to the city's alcohol ordinance to allow a pouring license permit for a one-day event;

D) Beth Warner, speaking about a project of Compassionate Friends of Polk County. (The organization is a support group for families to help with the grief and healing process after the loss of a child. The organization is non-sectarian. E) Tyler Rice, speaking about an Eagle Scout fund-raiser, "First Night Out";

F) Leo Cuzzort, speaking about "speed on Smith Avenue";

G) George Anderson, of Ethics in Government, regarding "government accountability to the taxpayers and ethics in government";

City Manager's Report

Cedartown City Manager Charles Akridge will discuss issues needing the commission's attention, as well as providing updates about ongoing projects, finances and other issues.

Unfinished Business

A) The possible addition of crosswalks near Peek Park;

B) Parker Fibernet proposal and franchise agreement -- postponed from earlier meetings, the commission has delayed signing a contract pending further review. The company plans to connect Cedartown to a fiberoptics link, including the city's industrial park.

C) Intergovernmental water service agreement with the Polk County Water Authority;

D) Cost estimates for the repair of sidewalks on Wissahickon Avenue next to the First Methodist Church;

E) Proposed littering and code enforcement fines;

F) Consideration of placing a four-way stop at the intersection of West Girard Avenue and Cave Spring Street;

G) Final draft of a revised purchasing policy for the city.

New Business

A) A new amusement device ordinance will be presented by the city attorney. This would regulate coin-operated poker and blackjack machines, among other devices.

B) A Recreation Master Plan is to be presented.

C) A Community Development Tax Incentive Ordinance is to be presented. This proposed ordinance is meant to stimulate investment into the downtown district.

D) Discussion of making all city parks smoke free, suggested by Commission Chairman Larry Odom;

E) An agreement with the Polk County Board of Elections for handling the November General Election;

F) Appointment of the Polk County Elections Superintendent as Cedartown Municipal General Elections Superintendent and Absentee Ballot Clerk;

G) Consideration of a Vision and Innovation Policy;

H) A discussion about Christmas lights, brought by Commissioner Scott Tillery.

Executive Session

The commission may call a closed executive session if needed for discussion of personnel matters, legal issues or real estate acquisitions.
