A collision involving two vehicles occured around 10:45 today in Cedartown.

A white Chevy Venture minivan apparently struck a green Pontiac GTP on the left side at the intersection of North Cave Spring St. and West Girard St.

The driver of the Pontiac sustained visible injuries to the head, but was coherent and had reportedly agreed to go to the hospital. A small child was also involved in the accident, but appeared to be okay.

The driver of the white van had no apparent injuries and was discussing the accident with officers.

Residents near the site claim that the intersection poses a serious threat to drivers and that several accidents have occured similar to this one, even though a 4-way stop/caution light has been installed at the intersection.

As a resident in this neighborhood, I can certainly tell you that this scene is nothing new! This happens alot more times than people think it does. As far as there being a 4 way stop there, it is not. Travelers on Cave Spring Street are cautioned to slow by a yellow caution light, while travelers on Girard Avenue are opposed with a red flashing light and should stop to yield to the traffic on Cave Spring Street. I find that this does not always happen as is apparent from the story above. I am not even sure that a 4-way stop would help as the caution light that is there has been there for several years and obviously ignored. I also have observed that most travelers do not obey the 35 mph sign on Cave Spring Street as you come into where Girard Ave intersects. I do not have any solutions for this problem on this corner, but am very suprised that the problem has only recently come into public view after having been a constant problem for many years.
