The second Felicia Claxton Motorcycle Ride will begin Saturday, Sept. 12 at Georgia Highlands College. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and bikers leave the college at 11 a.m.

Proceeds from the ride will continue to build an endowment for an ongoing scholarship to help students who would not be eligible for many of the standard scholarships or financial aid packages. Non-traditional students, for example — those have been out of high school for years or those who earned their GEDs and are interested in returning to college — don’t qualify for the HOPE scholarship because it requires students to have sustained a B average for 30 semester hours before becoming eligible.

The scholarship is named in memory of Felicia Claxton, the daughter of GHC faculty member Susan Claxton, who is an associate professor and program coordinator of the human services program at the college. Felicia, who graduated from Bremen High School, died as a result of complications from a heart transplant.

Riders will meet at the pavilion near Paris Lake, and will follow a scenic, 75-mile route. Lunch will be served when participants return to campus. The registration fee is $30. For further information, call 706-368-7618.

Felicia was and will always be my niece. She was dealt a bad hand and played it the best that she could. God has a special Angel in heaven with him! I still miss her. No matter what the situation, she always had a smile on her face. Her mom, Susan Claxton, my sister-in-law has gone through more than one person should be asked to endure. I Love her with all of my heart. I ask that anyone that can not go on the Ride to contact GHC to make a donation. It is going to a great cause in memory of a wonderful young lady that was called Home too soon.
