-Georgia Northwestern Technical College will offer a beginning class in chord piano, where in one session, students will learn all the chords needed to play any pop song. The class will be held at the Floyd Campus on Aug. 3, from 6 – 9:30 p.m., and at the Polk Campus on Aug. 6, from 6 – 9:30 p.m. If students don’t know the treble clef, they can send a SASE for a free pamphlet to Music Masters, 90 Molly Lane, Ringgold, GA, 30736. -All Animal Care , 455 W. Belmont Dr., Calhoun, (across from Wal-Mart) will host a Spay and Neuter Clinic on Saturday, July 25. The clinic sells a limited number of certificates (first come, first serve) for low cost spay, neutering and vaccines. The certificates will be sold between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the clinic. -Continuing Eduction for CPAs is hosting a “Fundamentals of Financial Calculations” webinar July 17-18 from 9-5 p.m. (EST). Because the course is available as a live web seminar, professionals may participate in the comfort of their own home or office. The course counts as Group Study CPE credit for CPAs. -The Dallas Theatre, in Dallas, presents Ivan Parker, the popular Southern Gospel recording artist, on Friday, July 24, 2009 , at 7:30 p.m. For more information regarding this event may be obtained by calling 678-314-4807.

-Oak Hill and The Martha Berry Museum has scheduled its second Historic Berry Bike Tour of the summer for 10 a.m., Saturday, July 18. Tours are free and open to the public. Reservations are encouraged but not required. Participants must furnish their own bicycles, and all riders should wear helmets. The main-campus loop is approximately three miles in length and features a mostly flat surface with a few rolling hills. The ride is appropriate for both children and adults. -The Cedartown High School Council will meet on July 15, 2009, at 8 a.m., in the conference room at the school. The meeting is open to the public.

-Miracles in Action, a Christ-centered support group, invites everyone to attend a faith-based twelve step meeting held every Saturday night at 7 p.m. at The Cathedral at Cedar Lake, located one mile north of Cedartown on Hwy. 27. The program is made up of men and women who have met with the adversity of addiction in the live of their families or themselves, and believe that victory lies within Jesus Christ. Whether it be drugs, alcohol, food, tobacco, co-dependency or stress, Miracles in Action seeks to counsel and assist those who would like to know more about the problems and solutions to addiction. -The Georgia Department of Education has begun the process of textbook adoption. As part of this process, Northside Elementary School, 100 N Philpot St., Cedartown, has been chosen as a designated Learning Resources Evaluation site. Curriculum and other resources will be on display in the school gym and available for educators and the public to examine, Monday through Thursday, June 29 – July 16, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The purpose of the state learning resource process is to provide local systems with a recommended list of learning resources for use in Georgia’s public schools.

The goal of this process is to provide school systems with a variety of learning resources from which to choose for each elementary/middle grades subject area and high school state-funded courses. Each local system will determine which learning resource best meets its particular instructional needs.

-The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office will have their 5th Annual Ride for Camp Good Times on July 25, 2009, at Ridge Ferry Park, in Rome. The event will be a motorcycle ride and car show. Registration for the motorcycle ride begins at 9 a.m., with a cost of $20 per bike. The ride will begin at 10 a.m., and will be approximately 70 miles.

Registration for the car and bike show will begin at 11 a.m., and the fee will also be $20. There will be judging for the people’s choice award, and the awards will be given out at 2:30 p.m. The ride benefits Camp Good Time, which is a three-week summer camp for physically and mentally challenged youth of Floyd and surrounding counties. -The Dallas Theater presents “The Voyage that Shook the World,” a Creation Ministries International world-class documentary that asks the question, ‘if Darwin knew what we know today, would he have developed his evolutionary theory?’

The high definition film revisits some of the incredible locations Darwin visited during his 1830s voyage to examine the ideas he formulated during the following years. -This summer , the Farm Fresh Vegetable Market will return to Cedartown. The market will be at the parking lot of Peek’s Park, located off College Street in Cedartown. -Tallatoona CAP, Inc. Polk HRDC will start a Cooling Energy Assistance Program for low-income households on August 3, 2009. Priority intake for elderly and homebound households is from August 3-7. The program will open to the general public on a first come, first serve basis on August 10. The program will provide a one-time benefit of $350 to clients who meet the eligibility criteria.

At the time of your appointment, you must have proof of income for all household members for the last 30 days for all individuals 18 years or older, most recent electric bill and legal proof of social security number for all household members. Ongoing events, services

-There is a free preschool program for eligible children at Tallatoona Head Start. Child must be age three by Sept. 1. Call 770-748-2844 for the requirements.

-The Compassionate Friends of Polk County meets the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Second Baptist Church, 152 Evergreen Lane, in Cedartown (across from Cherokee Elementary School).

The support group is for families to help with the grief and healing process after the loss of a child. It commemorates and honors children, siblings and grandchildren of all ages who have died from any cause.
