Even though the weather really isn’t showing it, the time has come for the Georgia High School Associations (GHSA) spring sports season to start.

Cedartown High School will be fielding several different sports this spring, including boys and girls track and field; boys and girls tennis; boys and girls golf; boys and girls soccer and a baseball team.

Several of those sports will have new head coaches this spring. In girls soccer, Sam Noland will be taking over the head coaching duties as former girls coach John Sheffield will now be the taskmaster for the boys team.

Nick Bridges will be the new boys track and field coach while Martina Couey is the new girls track and field coach.

In golf, Denver Pate takes over as the boys new head man and Bob Tracy returns as the girls coach.

Doyle Kelley is returning as the head baseball coach while the tennis teams will be manned by Malin Evans.

The first team to start play this spring was the Lady Bulldogs soccer team. Their first contest was Monday against East Paulding.

The girls and boys soccer teams, which started practicing Jan. 29, will both be back in action on Friday, as they host Villa Rica. The girls start at 5:30 p.m. and the boys follow at 7:30 p.m.

The next Cedartown sport to start their season will be the baseball team. The Bulldogs began practices Monday and their first game will be on Monday, Feb. 26 at Darlington The first pitch is slated to be thrown at 4:30 p.m.

The GHSA website doesn’t say when practices start for tennis, but matches weren’t allowed to be played until this past Monday.

According to Gasports.com, Cedartown’s first boys and girls tennis match isn’t until Thursday, March 1. They will play at home against Rockmart.

The match starts at 4 p.m.

Golf practices were allowed to start on Feb. 5. The first competition isn’t allowed until Feb. 19.

The Bulldogs first golf match isn’t until Thursday, March 1 at Cartersville Country Club against Cass. Tee time is scheduled for 3:45 p.m.

The Lady Bulldogs will also be playing that day, competing against the Lady Colonels.

As for Track and Field, the girls were allowed to start practicing on Jan. 22 and the boys on Jan. 29.

The girls first meet could have occurred as early as this past Monday and the boys Feb. 19. However, the CHS track and field teams will not compete until March.

Cedartown’s first meet will be on Tuesday, March 6 at home and will pit both the boys and girls against South Paulding, Bremen and Cartersville. The meet will start at 4:30 p.m.

So while family members, friends and fans may have to wear jackets and bring blankets to the games, the time has arrived for spring sports at Cedartown.
