A Sunday afternoon ATV accident has left an 18-year-old Polk County man critically injured.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class Chris Lewis was dispatched to the scene of an all-terrain vehicle accident Sunday around 3 p.m. on Browning Road in Rockmart.

Derek Carroll, 18, was traveling down Browning Road with a group of friends when the accident occurred.

Carroll was the last in the pack, traveling at excessive speed, when he failed to negotiate a curve on the roadway, the trooper said.

The all-terrain vehicle left the roadway and traveled down an embankment. The vehicle struck a fence and Carroll was ejected. He was not wearing a helmet at the time.

“He (Carroll) appeared to have head injuries on the scene,” said Trooper Lewis.

Emory Flight transported the victim to Grady Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.

“All-terrain vehicles are not good for asphalt roads,” said Trooper Lewis, “The tire pressure is low and they won’t turn like they do (on dirt).”

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the accident, the GSP said.

However, traffic charges are pending.
