In a lengthy work session Thursday night, Cedartown City Commissioners rolled up their sleeves and began work on the 2008 city budget.
Actual expenses, cost projections and cutting the fat to work toward a balanced budget led commissioners to in-depth discussions and examination of all the departments as they looked for ways to save money.
Costs of living raises and potential job cuts were two areas presenting commissioners with complex decisions to make.
Streamlining services that the city pays for is also getting a serious look.
Commissioners will request re-bidding in some areas due to changes in city needs.
Phone bills and wireless service expenses will be audited to determine where costs can be cut.
The citys fiscal year runs from January to December. The city is currently operating on the 2007 line item budget until the 2008 budget is completed and passed.
According to the citys charter, explained City Manager James Stephens, this is permitted until the new years budget is completed.
Stephens offered three proposals for the commissioners to consider in order to reach a balanced 2008 budget. Commissioners took those into consideration and are also pouring over the numbers line by line for question and discussion.
The informal meeting that is open to the public will be continued Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the council room of City Hall.
