Polk County school board members expressed concern last week that damage sustained to the Rockmart High School roof in an April 8 tornado has yet to be fixed.
The tornado peeled back the metal roofing over the main entrance of the high school and caused other minor damages to the facility.
Its embarrassing, said board member Rick Lundy. Its more than two weeks after the storm, and it hasnt been fixed. Thats the first thing you see when you drive up to the school. I just want to make sure we are being diligent
about this.
Fortunately, the school has not suffered any water leaks due to the damage.
Tom Reilly, facilities coordinator for Polk schools, told board members last Tuesday that no leaks had been reported and the roof had been temporarily patched.
Polk School District Superintendent Dr. Darrell Sorrells told the board that several contractors had been contacted to bid-out the repair work for the damaged roof, but so far, no one has submitted a final bid.
We have had several contractors come out and look at the damage, but right now, were waiting on bids to come in, Sorrells said in a later interview.
Board member Bettie Faye Lewis also wanted assurance that the high schools baseball net, also damaged during the storm, would be repaired. Reilly said that it would be fixed.
Also at the meeting, board members approved Sorrells recommendation to choose Trammell Lawn Care to maintain school grounds and athletic fields. Trammell was given the contract for $113,100.
They were the low-bidder out of three other companies.
