Local residents who have driven past the new Cedartown Depot and wondered what it looked like inside, now have the chance to get a sneak peak at the building’s interior.
On April 15, the Downtown Cedartown Association Board of Directors will host a cocktail reception at the Depot, located at 609 South Main St.
Lindsay Harrison-Woods, Main Street Director, said the event would definitely be classy event.
An impressive selection of food will be present for all participants of the cocktail reception, and attendees can munch away to the sounds of a brass quartet and violinist.
Residents wishing to attend, Woods said, must R.S.V.P by calling 770-748-2090 before April 8.
The event is also being used as a fundraiser for items that are still needed to make the Depot’s public grand opening complete.
But if sipping fancy drinks and nibbling on hors d’oeuvres, isn’t quite your celebration style, a grand opening, free of charge and open to the public will be held on April 22.
Beginning at 10 a.m., the Polk County Chamber of Commerce will be on hand to give tours of the depot to anyone wishing to check out Downtown Cedartown’s newest addition.
Woods said she is really looking forward to both the cocktail reception and the grand opening. “Everyone that I have taken in there for a look around has been amazed that it looks so similar to the original depot.”
The look of the new Cedartown Depot was constructed to closely resemble the Seaboard Depot. Ground was broken and construction began on the current depot in December 2003.
Rewind to 1904, when the original Seaboard Railroad Depot was constructed. Reflective of the times, the Seaboard Depot featured passenger waiting rooms, as well as quarters for railroad agents, a baggage room, freight rooms and ticket office.
The passenger shed is still a key part to the look of the current depot – though, this time it is for use by bicyclists and walkers using the Silver Comet Trail instead of train passengers.
The current Cedartown Depot’s main function will be housing various offices, as well as the Downtown Cedartown Association and the Chamber of Commerce Satellite Service Center.
Cedartown’s Welcome Center is also in the process of taking up residence there.
