Local businesses are already beginning to partner with the library to support this evergrowing endeavor that is a “wildly popular program,” according to library Branch Manager Sharon Cleveland. This statewide literature based program attracts youth to the library and encourages them to read, she explained.
Last summer 956 local children participated and checked-out over 10,000 books for a combined reading time of 9,639 hours, Cleveland noted. The children are encouraged to read with incentives provided by sponsors (local businesses) who donate free food coupons, weekly drawing prizes and promotional materials, she stated. “Monetary donations paid for the wonderful professional programs that were presented weekly.”
Currently the Cedartown Performing Arts Center has donated tickets to some of their shows for the library to raffle off with all the proceeds benefitting the 2005 “FUNtastic” Summer Reading Program.
Tickets sales begin April 1 and are one dollar and can be purchased at the library with winners announced the week of each show. “The seats are excellent and valued at $70 a pair,” explained Jessica Perry, children’s coordinator at the library. She said that the tickets for three different shows include “The Preservation Hall Jazz Band,” “The Cotton Patch Gospel” and “The Osborne Brothers.”
Cleveland explained that the library distributes eye-catching promotional brochures in May to all of the school-aged children in Cedartown schools and daycares. As a sponsor, the business/company or family name would be listed on this publication that will act as an activity calendar for hundred of families throughout the summer.
Donations of gift certificates, stuffed animals, games, toys and money to book shows are needed for the program to continue to grow as it has each year, Cleveland explained.
Donor recognition is posted by a dollar value system and ranges from $1,000 down to $99 or below.
Cleveland is asking the community to help promote family literacy in Cedartown by taking part in this summer’s “FUNtastic Reading” program. The deadline for sponsorship participation is April 22. Contact the library at 770-748-5644 or FAX at 770-748-4399 to participate.
