The Polk County Youth Baseball League, a Dizzy Dean affiliate that plays in Cedartown, will be hosting a United States Travel Baseball Association (USTBA) Super Invitational National Qualifier tournament this Saturday and Sunday. The tournament is being called the “Battle at the Diamond”.

Teams from Polk County, East Cobb, West Cobb, Carrollton, Rome, Paulding County, Acworth, Cumming, Woodstock, Powder Springs, Canton, Forsyth County, Sawnee Mountain and Roswell will be competing at the Bert Wood Youth and Athletic Complex, formerly known as Northwest Park, in one of the biggest youth baseball tournaments to ever be held in Cedartown. Some games will also be played at the Cedartown Middle School. Thirty-six teams ranging in age groups from 9-years-old to 14-years-old will compete in the Battle at the Diamond tournament.

“We will have a team, the Polk County Pirates, in each age group,” Polk County Youth Baseball League President Tommy Reilly said. “Those teams are comprised of players from our league. They are players willing to play extra games at a cost.”

A USTBA Super Invitational National Qualifier tournament will allow championship teams that compete in the American Division to receive a paid entry to the USTBA state championships or a full entry refund. The championship teams will also receive bonus state and national ranking points.

The tournament will have a unique format of American and National Division Championships with pool play and a playoff with three games minimum. First and second place player and team awards will be given in each division.

A home run award for players that hit home runs over the fence and a unique pre-championship game and awards ceremony will be held. Also, any pitcher that throws a complete game shutout or perfect game will receive a golden arm trophy.

Several of the teams competing in Cedartown this weekend are nationally ranked in the USTBA national rankings. Those teams are: 10-and-under Team Wilson, ranked sixth; 11-and-under Acworth Warriors, ranked fourth; 13-and-under Sawnee Mountain Hawks, ranked eighth; 13-and-under Canton Junior Grizzlies, ranked tenth.

Teams scheduled to compete in each age group are as follows:

9-and-under: Carrollton Clippers, Hobgood Lightning, Polk County Pirates and Rome Fire.

10-and-under: Rome Rattlers, Team Wilson, Paulding Bulletts, North Georgia Dawgs, Rome Razorbacks and Bremen Demons.

11-and-under: Polk County Pirates, Rome Elite, Georgia Tigers, Paulding Panthers and Acworth Warriors.

12-and-under: North Georgia Indians, Acworth Warriors, Carrollton Clippers and Polk County Pirates.

Reilly said the Polk County Youth Baseball League’s Web site, www.playpcyb.com, will post announcements and updates throughout the weekend about what's happening at the Battle at the Diamond USTBA tournament.
