The Cedartown Bulldogs tennis team ended the regular season on a positive note last Tuesday, sweeping past Rockmart 5-0 while the Lady Bulldogs fell 3-2.

The victory sent the boys to an 8-5 overall record and a 5-2 Region 6-AAA mark. The Lady Bulldogs finished the regular season at 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the region.

For the boys, No. 1 singles player Zach Foster beat Rockmart’s Josh Witt 6-1, 6-1. No. 2 singles player Josh Kirkpatrick downed Yellow Jacket Micah Andrews 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. No. 3 singles player Bradley Strickland took out Rockmart’s Josh Matthews 7-5, 6-4.

In doubles play, the No. 1 doubles team of Scott Helmes and Zach Brown of Cedartown won 6-3, 6-4. The Bulldogs No. 2 doubles team of Rod Patel and Trevor Mehrkens won 6-1, 6-2.

“This was our last match of the season,” Bulldogs Head Coach Malin Evans said. “What a great finish for the boys. I’m so proud of the way the boys performed on the courts.”

Evans also noted that her alternate player, Chris Clonts, displayed a lot of heart and character last Tuesday.

“Chris showed the true fighting spirit of Cedartown tennis against Rockmart,” Evans said. “He was our alternate player and went up against Rockmart’s Dylan Payne. If you want to know what Cedartown High School tennis is about, Chris showed it in his match. He gave 100 percent of himself for the team. He has a positive spirit of never giving up and always supporting his teammates. He also displayed a sportsmanship that we are all very proud of.”

Evans also mentioned her other alternate players Jacob Hubbard, Harris Gray, Justin Minge and Oscar Guzman and the outstanding support they give to their teammates.

“We’ve been able to excel this year and beat teams that we wouldn’t have last year and it’s because every member of this team is so loyal to one another and so supportive,” Evans said.

The Cedartown boys will play again on Tuesday, April 15 at Dellinger Park in Cartersville at 10 a.m. in the Region 6-AAA tournament.

In the girls game, Rebecca Roberts was still out with her injury and it forced the Lady Bulldogs to shuffle around their singles players, but they still had a solid overall performance.

At No. 1 singles, Brittany Fowler defeated Rockmart’s Macey Albert 6-2, 6-0. No. 2 singles player Reanah Kellogg won over Rockmart’s Heather Clark 6-3, 7-5. At No. 3 singles, McCall Barrett lost to Lady Yellow Jacket Kelli Brannon 0-6, 0-6.

In No. 1 doubles, Jasmine Irvin and Jasmine Gibson lost 6-7, 3-6 to Rockmart’s Megan Clark and Kyser Barnes. At No. 2 doubles, Jasmine Johnson and Briana Key lost 3-6, 6-1, 5-7 to Lady Yellow Jackets Rose Lanzo and Becky Garland.

The Cedartown girls play again on Monday, April 14 at Dellinger Park at 10 a.m. in the Region 6-AAA tournament.
