ATLANTA – A large chunk of some seniors' property tax bills would be wiped away under legislation introduced Tuesday in the Senate.

Sen. J.B. Powell, D-Blythe, proposes to allow seniors who are at least 70 years old a complete exemption from the educational portion of value-based property taxes on their primary residence, under Senate Bill 538. Powell's bill gives no regard to income.

Current tax laws allow seniors 62 and older a homestead exemption up to $10,000 from the same taxes, provided their income did not exceed $10,000 the year prior. Some individual counties have more generous tax breaks for sen-ior citizens.
