Tuesday night, the Polk County Board of Commissioners recognized Capt. Kelly McLendon, Polk Sheriff's Department, for his actions following a state helicopter crash on June 5, 2007. McClendon and two other men were in the plane due to a search for marijuana plants. Chairman Billy Croker and Commissioner Sandra Galloway presented Capt. McLendon, middle, a framed copy of the resolution recognizing his efforts. Noted was the fact that McLendon "ignored his own safety" by pulling his fellow officers from the burning aircraft. The document also recognized that he had been presented the Georgia Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award for Valor in September.
