The group is best described as Southern rock and blues with a kick, as they perform original tunes as well as classic cover hits from artists such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mother’s Finest, the Rolling Stones and many others.
Since forming in 2006, the band has enjoyed much local success and was named Band of the Year by the Georgia Country Gospel Music Association in 2007 followed by Horizon Band of the Year honors last year from the American Country Music Association International.
The concert runs from 7 to 10 p.m.
Opening for Southern Thunder will be songwriter and recording artist Randy Howard.
A native Georgian, Howard’s song “I Don’t Know” is the lead track on Hank Williams III’s album “A Rising Outlaw.”
As that song was making waves on the country charts, Williams recorded another Howard original, “My Drinkin’ Problems.” Howard’s “All American Redneck,” released by Warner Bros. Records, is still considered a cult/juke box classic.
He was named to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1998.
The First Friday Concert takes place Friday at Bridgepoint Plaza. Admission is free.
In case of rain, the concert will be moved to the Rome City Auditorium located at 601 Broad St.
