Cedartown Fire Department responded to a structure fire at an abandoned home located at 403 Herbert St.

According to Cedartown Fire Department Assistant Chief Lee Wilkerson, firefighters arrived on the scene to find heavy fire blowing out of an upstairs bedroom. The fire soon spread into a larger room in the center of the home.

The fire spilled into the yard of the abandoned home. Firefighters had to quickly respond in order to avert the fire from moving to a neighbor's yard.

Firefighters quickly put out the blaze and began the work of looking for hot spots and trying to determine what started the fire.

According to Wilkerson, officials do not know what started the blaze at this time.

Several observers on the scene stated that the home had been abandoned for about two years.

Greg Gray with the Cedartown Historic Preservation Committee was also on the scene and stated that the home was the former site of a hospital. The home was most recently used for apartments.
