Douglas Jackson Floyd, 67, 613 N. College St., passed away Wednesday, July 23.

He was born Aug. 9, 1935 in Haralson County and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cedartown, where he was a former deacon and Sunday School member.

He was past president of the Cedartown Optimist Club and former member of the Bulldog Club as well as a former president of St. Joseph’s Hospital Heart Transplant Association.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Jackson and Corine Rutledge Floyd.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Jeffers Floyd; sons, Steve and Tommy Floyd; daughters Sandra McNally and Jan Floyd; sister, Dorothy Stevens; and six grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Sunday, July 27 in the First Baptist Church with the Dr. David Taylor officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to either the First Baptist Church or the American Heart Association.

The Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Garrison

Charles E. Garrison, Sr., 78, 1491 Taylorsville-Macedonia Rd., Taylorsville, passed away Thursday, July 24, following a period of declining health.

He was born October 12, 1924 in Taylorsville, the son of the late Luna Rutledge Garrison and the late Samuel J. Garrison.

Garrison was a member of the Taylorsville Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday School director and choir member. He was also the owner and operator of the Garrison Dairy for many years and was a 50-year member of the John Akin Masonic Lodge #537 F&AM of Taylorsville. He was also a member of the Euharlee Farmers Club as well as a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army during the European campaign.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie E. McDurmon.

Survivors include: two daughters, Linda Campbell, Rockmart, and Diane Bockholt of Calhoun; two sons, Charles “Chuck” Garrison and Donny H. Garrison, both of Taylorsville; four sisters, LaVerne Turner, Stuart, FL, Hazel Daws, Douglasville, Martha Gilstrap, Cartersville and Jerri Flournoy, Ludowici; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 26, in the sanctuary of the Taylorsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Dempsey and the Rev. Doug Harris officiating. Interment followed at the Taylorsville Cemetery.

Pallbearers included: Tommy Daws, Jimmy Turner, Matt Flournoy, Jerry McDurmon and Keith McDurmon. Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Euharlee Farmers Club, the deacons of the Taylorsville Baptist Church, members of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class, and fellow lodge brothers of the John A. Akin Masonic Lodge.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Garrison to the Taylorsville Baptist Church, 19 Church St. SW, Taylorsville, GA 30178.

The Freeman Harris Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Mr. Harkins

Donald C. Harkins, 78, Scottsville, died Wednesday, July 23 at 9 a.m. in the Gordon Hospital.

He was born in Floyd County October 12, 1924, the son of the late Denzil R. and Sally Gray Harkins.

Harkins was a well-known cattle rancher and was a member of the Plainsville Independent Methodist Church.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II in the South Pacific, where he earned the WWII Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with two bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with bronze stars and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Donald Eric Harkins and Carrie Gail Harkins as well as a sister, Mary R. Barnes and five brothers, Burnell, Barry, Marion and John Harkins, and D.R. Harkins, Jr.

He is survived by: wife, Elaine Harkins; son, Terry Harkins, Cedartown; daughters Carole H. Bridges, Scottsville and Linda Garing, Pell City, AL; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 25, at the Plainsville Independent Methodist Church with Rev. Bobby Stephens officiating. Burial followed at the Fain Cemetery with Juanita Grisset in charge of the music.

The pallbearers were: Casey Bridges, Jason Fuller, J.C. Garland and Glenn, Sean and Johnny Harkins. Honorary pallbearers were: Paul Garing, Jerry Garland, Tommy Gates and Bruce Schuler.

The Thomas Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements while the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home made the announcement available locally.

Mrs. McClure

Nora Cheatwood McClure, 97, Hwy 120 East, Buchanan, passed away Saturday, July 19.

She was born October 19, 1905, and was the daughter of the late Dave Cheatwood and Etta Jane Hilburn Cheatwood. She was also a member of the Baptist Tabernacle Church in Buchanan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. McClure, her son, Harley Ray McClure and two daughters, Geraldine and Darlene McClure.

Survivors include: daughters Hazel McCollum, Cedartown, and Betty Ann Priest, Athens, AL; sons Lovie McClure, Bremen, and Horace McClure, also of Bremen, David McClure, Tallapoosa, Delbert McClure, Buchanan, and Eugene McClure, also of Buchanan; sister, Mildred Willis, Cedartown; 27 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, July 22, at the Baptist Tabernacle Church with Rev. Buddy Gentry and Elder Horace Kimball officiating. Music was furnished by Patty McClure and accompanied by Randy Stamps.

Interment followed at the Perryman Brannon Cemetery.

Pallbearers were McClure’s grandchildren, Tony Bowling, Barry McClure, Rodney McClure, Mike McClure, Tommy Priest, Steve McClure and Scott McClure.

The honorary pallbearers were her great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

The Hightower Funeral Home of Bremen was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. McKibben

Joe R. McKibben, 68, of Fountain Inn, SC, formerly of Cedartown, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2003.

He was born in Cedartown May 11, 1933 to Zelma Maddox McKibben and the late Chester McKibben, and was married to Phorn Shumate McKibben. He served in the U.S. Navy as a radar man in the Korean War on the U.S.S. Oriskany, retired from the floor-covering business, was a member of Masonic Lodge 404, and was of the Baptist faith.

Other survivors include daughters, Kim McKibben, Jeannie McKibben-Greene, Beth M. Landreth, and Trisha Williams; son, Chet Williams; sisters, Bobbie Hooper and Lanell Alexander; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Saturday, July 26, at 2 p.m. at Fountain Baptist Church of Greenview, S.C. Memorial contributions may be made to GHS Hospice, 255 Enterprise Blvd., Suite 140, Greenville, SC, 29615.

Cremation Society of South Carolina was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Dean

Michael Lee Dean, 23, of 830 Dugdown Rd., Buchanan, passed away Monday, July 21, 2003.

He was born August 10, 1979 in Floyd County and was a member of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded by a son, Michael Hayden Dean, in 2000.

Survivors include: wife, Jana Lynn Dean; son, Andrew Dean; parents, Charles and Sheila Robinson Dean; brothers, Che’ and Sheldon Dean; sisters, Toni Harrell and Lynn Haley.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, July 24, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Swift officiating.

Interment followed in the Lime Branch cemetery.

Pallbearers were William Sisenros, Greg Gary, Tracey Westmoreland, Marty McClain, Joel Guthrie, and Willie Short.
