City officials Monday learned that several streets in Polk County have been approved for paving under the state LARP (Local Assistance Road Program) fund.

State Sen. Nathan Dean, D-Rockmart, announced the funding in a meeting with Cedartown, Aragon, Rockmart and Polk County elected officials. Dean called the meeting at the Rockmart office of the Polk County Chamber of Commerce after meeting earlier in the day with state Department of Transportation officials.

“I’m glad to bring this amount of money back home,” Dean said.

The funds were released by the DOT after roads were inspected and graded according to DOT criteria. Several roads on the county’s list were denied because they failed to meet requirements, including a minimum width of 16 feet.

Under the LARP program, county and municipal governments submit a list of streets needing paving. The DOT either grants or denies based on “need” - a subjective word sometimes defined differently by the DOT and local governments.

Streets receiving grant monies are listed as follows:

Cedartown - Bryant Circle, $3,772.52; Thornton Avenue, $5,981.43; College, $9,892.73; Laurel Place, $3,379.56; Sev-enth, $5,069.34; and Thompson, $12,654.47.

County - Old Cave Spring Road, $257,970.99; Drummond, $39,595.26; Stewart, $27,636; Weaver, $2,968.50; Lovorn, $21,541.02; Substation Road, $27,310.85; Paula Court, $2,557.56; McCombs Loop, $5,503.70; Wieuca Way, $9,318.95; and Lewis Road South, $16,633.95.

Rockmart received $20,148.53 - $10,649.33 to pave Marble and $9,499.20 for Clearwater.

Aragon receives $6,303.81, to pave Aragon Road; Cedartown receives $40,750 for six streets; and the county receives $257,970.99 for 10 roads.

Beginning in June, Cedartown City Manager Barry Atkison said, Central St., Prior St., Thornton Ave., East Fairmount Ave., Lakeview Dr., Slusser Ave., Merritts Ave., Third St., East Girard, Sixth St., Springdale Dr. and West John Hand Rd. will be paved or repaved, whichever the case may be. While these roads are within the Cedartown city limits, the roads will paved by members of the Polk County government, he said.
