The Rockmart/Polk County Rotary Club held its annual golf tournament fund-raiser Monday at Cherokee Golf and Country Club in Cedartown.

The Rockmart/Polk County Rotary Golf Classic 2008 was a bit smaller this year, which club members said appeared to stem from a general slowdown in the economy. Regardless, due to donations of gifts and prizes from area businesses, the club came only a few hundred dollars short of its fund-raising goal.

The annual event is one of the club's major fund-raisers to support local charitable efforts, including adult literacy classes.

Several prizes were awarded, including closest to hole, longest drive and team wins.

First place team, representing Rock and Earth Technologies Group, were Shane Leatherwood, Derrick Noland, Preston Herring and Michael Leatherwood (pictured above, left to right).

The second place team, representing G. Ben Turnipseed Engineers, Inc., were Tom Martin, Tyson Haynes, Jeff Ellis and Rick Jeffries.

The hird place team, Georgia State Bank, were Lamar Pilgrim, Larry Gore, Bill Pilgrim and Scott Suppers.

Each member of the top two teams won a golf umbrella. The first-place team also got $75 gift certificates, and the second-place team got $50 certificates. The third place team got $25 gift certificates, golf tees and score keepers.

Jeremy Hickman won a golf bag, golf balls and golf tees for hitting the longest drive.

Eddie Smith and Shane Leatherwood won golf bags, balls and tees for hitting closest to the hole on hole no. 11 and no. 17.

The grand prize this year was a stay at a luxury cabin in the Reynolds Plantation golf community on Lake Oconee, near Greensboro, Georgia. The prize winner was Tyson Haynes.
