Dren Morgan of the Cedartown Fire Department said that 42-year-old Cristy Shelly was travelling south on Cave Spring Rd. when her 1987 BMW left the road. The accident, officials say, may have been the result of excessive speed as she entered the dangerous curve between Evergreen Lane and Gananmar Estates.
Once she lost control, the BMW was said to have flipped several times. Shelly was ejected and the car came to a rest on top of her, Morgan said. Because of the resulting position, it is believed that the victim was not wearing her seatbelt.
The fire department and the Cedartown Police Department were the first to arrive. Shelly, however, was deceased upon their arrival.
This is the second fatality on Cave Spring Rd. within the past six months and the second just over one month.
At the same curve, on October 22, 16-year-old Whitney Hope Taylor was killed when she swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle and left the roadway. Similar to Shelly, Taylor was ejected from her vehicle as it overturned in the grass near Gananmar Estates.
On April 2, 62-year-old Toney Taylor was killed in a head-on collision on US 27 at Hwy 100.
