Bobby Alexander recently announced his bid for re-election to the Cedartown City Commission.

Alexander has been a city commissioner for over 30 years, having been first elected in 1970.

The candidate said the current issues facing Cedartown are the needed expansion of the waste and sewer services and improving the curbs and gutters in residential areas of the city.

“We are currently working with the county in providing such services as animal control and building inspection,” he said.

Alexander said the city commission needs to focus on getting new plants and businesses in the Industrial Park off the Cedartown Bypass.

He listed some of his accomplishments, including working with the commission on building the Cedartown Civic Complex in 1974, the city pool at Peek Forrest Park, the remodeling of the pool for the 1996 Olympic Games, and developing Northwest Park.

The commissioner worked to get a SPLOST passed to have extra funds to upgrade city equipment and buildings. He has served on the Cedartown Development Agency, which brings industries into Cedartown. He was instrumental in beginning the annual Christmas parade, and has worked hard since it began as the committee chairman.

Alexander has worked for six city managers and three city clerks during his time in office.

He said he has worked to hold down the water rates and the tax millage for all citizens, and has brought city employees’ pay in line with those of surrounding cities.

He helped get the old Cedartown Landfill off the EPD’s active list, and worked with Georgia’s Municipal Mayor’s Motorcade at Northwest Regional for many years.

Alexander is married to the former JoAnn Ledbetter of Cedartown.

The couple has one daughter, Cindy, and are members of Union Grove Baptist Church.
