The Cedartown High School tennis team opened the 2003 season with a tournament in Cartersville’s Dellinger Park on March 8. The Bulldogs competed against Cartersville, Cass and Wheeler high schools. Posting wins for the CHS team were Autumn Rutledge, Jessica Roberts, Keela McCollum, Joy Tillery, Drew Shaw, and Chris Pezzin.

Cedartown Middle School also secured wins in players Max Wilson and Hunter Fincher.

“This tournament was a great way to start the season,” said CHS tennis coach Tony Lundy. “It allowed our players to gain much-needed experience prior to the start of our region play.”

In other news, the CHS team will be holding the “7th Annual Tennis Marathon” at the high school courts on March 14, beginning at 4 p.m. and ending 12 hours later, at 4 a.m. the next morning.

Although the marathon officially lasts 12 hours, the public is invited to attend at any time during the evening, and to stay as long as they wish. The marathon always draws a large crowd of students and adults, not just tennis players.

“This is our only fund raiser for the season,” said Lundy. “I hope every one will come out and enjoy the day and night. It’s lots of fun, and all proceeds go to buying uniforms, equipment and lots and lots of tennis balls. “

This year marks the second year the marathon will be held at CHS. In years past, all tennis activity for the school was held at the Peek’s Park courts.

The CHS tennis courts, completed in early spring of last year, are located behind the softball field on the Westside Elementary School turnoff.
