Cedartown seniors needing to get tested for high blood pressure or prostate problems won’t be able to use the “It’s just too expensive” excuse anymore.

Polk Medical Center, in conjunction with Cedar Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, will offer free health screenings and discounted lab work during a Senior Adult Health Fair on May 17.

Free health screenings include blood pressure, blood oxygen level, body fat percentage and bone density screenings. The lab work, according to PMC’s Day Surgery Manager and Community Awareness Coordinator Lawren Dentmon, “is deeply discounted.

”The health fair will offer $10 chemistry profiles and thyroid tests, $8 lipid profiles and $6 complete blood count tests. Prostate screenings will be offered for $12.

Participants who get a chemistry profile can learn about their levels of sodium, potassium, chloride, blood glucose (sugar) and calcium. The test also measures proper liver function.

Complete blood count tests are instrumental in gathering important information about the kinds and numbers of cells in the blood.

A complete blood count test can help doctors diagnose conditions like anemia, infection and many other health problems.

Lipid tests measure the amount of triglyceride and cholesterol in a person’s body.

“These tests usually run in the hundreds of dollars,” said Dentmon, “and a lot of seniors won’t get tested because Medicare won’t pay for these tests now.”

In addition, the fair will include different vendor booths where seniors can get important information about medical supplies and other health equipment. Participants can also register to win a door prize, Dentmon said.

“This is the first event we’ve planned together,” said Leesa Copeland of Cedar Valley Nursing and

Rehabilitation. “And we’re hoping to make this an annual event.”

Both Dentmon and Copeland remind participants of the health fair to abstain from eating or drinking eight hours prior to testing.

The health fair will be held at the Cedartown Nutrition Center, 605 Lynton Dr., in Cedartown, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
