Police had to physically remove a driver from his car after he fled police on Sunday, June 1.
According to police:
Polk County Police Sgt. Jon Jones was travelling on State Hwy 6 at approximately 3:52 a.m. when he saw a white Dodge “seeming to have difficulty maintaining his lane of travel.”
Jones activated his lights and siren, but the Dodge, driven by Douglasville resident Jimmy Clyde Edwards, Jr., 24, would not stop. After passing Bethlehem Rd., the officer moved ahead of the Edwards. “I advised Patrolman [Jesse] Morris [who was driving behind Jones at the time] to follow the vehicle and that I would get in front of the vehicle to attempt to force the driver to stop,” Jones wrote in his report. “I successfully maneuvered in front of the vehicle and gradually slowed to a stop near the intersection of State Hwy 6 and Grady Road.”
Even though Jones’ patrol car blocked the road, Edwards did not stop; he drove off the shoulder of the road, swerving around the parked unit, then continued on at a high rate of speed. Morris and Jones quickly regained their pursuit.
Speeding along the highway, the Dodge strayed across both lanes of traffic. The driver nearly lost control of his vehicle when he swerved near the Northview Cemetery; he did, however, regain control and the chase continued.
The officers watched Edwards run through red lights at Philpot St. and College St. as he entered Cedartown. Edwards then turned onto College St., driving there until he reached Canal St. When he turned east on Canal St., Sgt. Carl Rice of the Cedartown Police Department met the Dodge head-on, forcing Edwards to stop.
Jones jumped out of his car with his gun drawn. He approached the suspect, keeping the handgun aimed at Edwards. But when the Dodge driver was told to step out of the vehicle, he rolled up the window and locked the doors. The glass would only serve as a temporary barrier, as it was shattered when CPD Officer Jonathon Fuller struck the window with his expandable baton.
With the glass broken, police removed Edwards from the car and placed him facedown on the pavement. While in police custody, Edwards reportedly admitted to drinking Vodka and using various drugs before driving, though later he would refuse a blood alcohol test.
Edwards was charged with fleeing/attempting to elude, DUI (driving under the influence), failure to maintain lane, failure to yield to emergency vehicles, driving on the wrong side of the road, improper use of a turning lane, disregarding a red light (two counts), not using a turning signal (two counts), a seatbelt violation, driving on a suspended license and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.
