The Cedartown basketball teams traveled to Douglas County last Tuesday to face Class AAAA Douglas County High School. The Bulldogs (3-1) fell to No. 4 ranked Douglas County 93-88 while the Lady Bulldogs (3-1) defeated the Lady Tigers 66-60.

The following is a recap of each game:

Douglas Co. 93, CHS 88

The Douglas County Tigers (5-0) were as good as advertised last Tuesday night as they jumped out to a 19 point halftime lead over the previously undefeated Bulldogs.

The Tigers, which have been state ranked all season, used an effective pressure defense early on to jump on Cedartown.

“There pressure hurt us in the first half,” said Cedartown Head Coach John Sheffield. “We were constantly trying to play catch up.”

After the break, the Bulldogs begin to handle the Tigers pressure better and started fighting their way back into the game.

Cedartown closed the Tigers lead to five late in the fourth quarter when Nagee Smith dunked. However, that is as close as the Bulldogs could get as Douglas County held on for the 93-88 win.

“We have some things we need to work on before region play starts,” Sheffield stated. “But I was pleased with our effort tonight. (Douglas County’s) offense can score quick and often but we slowed them down in the second half and we started finishing on the offensive end.”

Derrick Sams was a big contributor in the second half as he scored 18 points. Sams finished the game with 22.

Cory Gardhigh led all Bulldog scorers with 23 points. Quan Martin had 20 points, including four three pointers and Smith finished with 19 points.

The Bulldogs will return to play tonight when they open their Region 6-AAA schedule against the Central-Carroll Lions. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Central High School.

CHS 66, Douglas Co. 60

The Lady Bulldogs won their second straight game last Tuesday as they defeated Douglas County 66-60.

Cedartown entered the game scoring 45.3 points per game but erupted for a season high 66 against a solid Lady Tigers team.

Courtney Martin led Cedartown with 21 points, including several clutch baskets. Douglas County (3-2) was paced by their star player Riley Thompson, who also scored 21 points.

Cedartown will face Central-Carroll tonight in their first Region 6-AAA game this year. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Central High School.
