The Cedartown girls tennis team saw their season come to an end last week at the Region 6-AAA tournament at Dellinger Park in Cartersville.

Cedartown - seeded No. 5 for the tournament - lost to higher seeded Central-Carroll 3-1.

“We played a fantastic match, just like the boys,” Cedartown Head Coach Malin Evans said. “During the season we played Central in our first region match and lost to them 5-0. So to come out here and compete as well as we did says a lot about the hard work and dedication this team has.”

Cedartown finishes the season with a 4-7 record.

“The girls worked so hard, they gave their best,” Evans said. “The match took three hours.”

The new doubles team of Shinese Price and Brittany Fowler lost their match, but not before making their coach proud.

“The girls hung in well,” Evans said. “They got back every ball they could. They played them close but the Central girls eventually won.”

The other doubles team, consisting of Briana Key and Jasmine Gibson, lost after putting up a valiant effort.

“They fought hard,” Evans said. “The last time we only got two games against Central. This time the girls were tied 3-3 in the second set before losing.”

Once doubles play was over, all the single players began to play. In the format that was being used, all three single players needed to win their matches in order for Cedartown to defeat Central-Carroll. If one player lost, Cedartown’s season was over.

“It was a tough situation to be in,” Evans said. “But the girls responded well. I’m proud of them.”

No. 1 singles player Jordan Nix lost a heartbreaker in her first set.

“Jordan fought back hard to try and win,” Evans said. “She played very well but the set went to Central 7-5. It was very close.”

Meanwhile, No. 2 singles player Adrienne Hackney, who has a strong mental game according to her coach, won the first set 6-1 before dropping the second set.

Also playing at the same time was No. 3 singles player Rehana Kellogg. She won her first set.

“Thanks to her quick movement and smart play, she won,” Evans said.

Nix then dropped her second set 6-3 to officially eliminate the Cedartown team.

While Nix lost, Hackney had fought back from being down 4-0 in her third set to going ahead 5-4.

“Adrienne wanted to finish her last high school tennis match but the girl from Central was to tired to continue so she gave Adrienne the last game,” Evans said.

Hackney officially goes down as the 6-4 winner and wins her match.

“The last match with Rehana was stopped during the third set since our team was officially eliminated,” Evans said.

Despite the loss, Evans is excited about the future.

“We are all looking forward to next season,” Evans said. “Not only with the girls but the guys, too. We have such a positive team and we are excited about the things we can accomplish in the future.”
