The fifth annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes Girls Team Basketball Camp wrapped up on Wednesday at Berry College.
The camp was attended by a total of 24 high school teams from Georgia and Tennessee including local teams from Cedartown, Rockmart and Adairsville. Each team got in eight to 10 games as well as taking part in skill and team-building sessions.
This year was the first time the camp has been held at Berry with most of the activity in the Stephen J. Cage Athletic and Recreation Center.
Each night there was an assembly with music provided by local artist Haley Morgan Smith, and Roger Woods, an FCA staff member from Chattanooga, handled the speaking duties. Camp Director Janie Jones said the camp was not just to teach basketball skills, but to help the girls in other areas.
“We wanted to help the girls spiritually, emotionally and athletically,” said Jones. “The camp is for coaches who want more for their athletes than to just be good basketball players.”
Berry men’s coach Jeff Haarlow helped lead the skill sessions along with other coaches and FCA volunteer staff. Each team was assigned a college athlete as huddle leader.
Jones said the camp staff had one main goal.
“Most of all, we wanted to teach (the girls) how to be Christian athletes and how to give glory to God,” said Jones. “I feel like we had had a great response from them and that they had a great time here.”
