The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) is advising motorists in Rockmart and Polk County of a detour off West Elm Street/State Route (S.R.) 6 Business at the CSX Railroad crossing, scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, 2009.

The closing is to accommodate work by the railroad company on installing deck panels and repaving the crossing.

Westbound traffic will be detoured off S.R. 6 Business onto S.R. 6, left on U.S. 278, and back to S.R. 6 Business.

Eastbound traffic will be redirected onto U.S. 278, right on SR 6, and back S.R. 6 Business.

“We understand that the closure of West Elm Street on Tuesday may cause some inconvenience and delays, but it is necessary for repairing the crossing as quickly as possible and giving the roadway back to the traveling public and local traffic by the end of the day,” explained Kent Sager, district engineer at the Georgia DOT office in Cartersville.

Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other road operation on interstates and state routes.

Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to inclement weather.
