This home on Jackson Street was heavily damaged in a fire some years ago and was condemned. The court order authorizing the city to demolish the structure was signed in February 2007.

Cedartown residents may hear bulldozers and backhoes at work in their neighborhoods next week.

Cedartown City Manager Charles Akridge said pending the completion of court hearings and paperwork, city crews are poised to begin the long awaited demolition of condemed houses.

Akridge said he expects city workers to get started at 926 Davenport St. and 120 Jackson St. Work is scheduled to begin around 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 27.

Earlier this year, the City of Cedartown sent out notices to owners of properties that failed to meet city codes. Property owners were given a timeline by which they either had to make improvements to bring properties up to code and make them safe and livable -- or they were subject to being condemned and torn down.

Akridge said more dilapidated houses will be torn down once condemnation proceedings are completed.

I hope the City bills the property owners for the demolition costs. I don't know if ownership of the land goes to the City as part of the condemnation proceedings. But the land should go to the city if taxpayers are paying for the structures to be demolished. Obviously, removing these structures improves the property, and the owner should not get a gift of services from City taxpayers.

Can someone with the City please enlighten us on how this works?
