A Cedartown man who was a substitute teacher is in jail facing a variety of charges including enticing a child for indecent purposes and computer pornography, according to the GBI and Polk County Jail.

Edward Keith Kelley, 51, of 755 Collard Valley Road, Cedartown, was arrested by the Polk County Police Department April 9.

The investigating was conducted by the GBI, the Polk County police and the Glynn County Sheriff’s Office, said John Bankhead, a GBI spokesman.

The GBI arrest warrant charged Kelley with enticing a child for indecent purposes because he allegedly attempted to meet a minor to have sex, but was unknowingly talking to an investigator from South Carolina, Bankhead said.

Bankhead referred questions about the pornography charge to Glynn County. Investigators there and in Polk County could not be reached for comment Tuesday .

Penny Reese, personnel director with the Polk County School System, verified that Kelley had been a substitute teacher for the past couple of years. She said he was taken off the approved substitute teacher list when the school system learned of his arrest.

Reese said all people wishing to substitute teach must have a background check and fingerprint check done before starting their job.

She said Kelley had both.

“Everything was fine at the time,” she said.

Reese said the school system had no other official comment.

This is happening all over the country. Go to www.schoolteachernews.com and click on the Scandal page. This year they have documented over 170 of these types of incidents. In 2008 they found 478 of these kinds of cases.
