The $1.89 million in state funds for a new Rockmart library have been added to the FY1010 Budget.

The money was in the original budget but was later dropped.

Rockmart Mayor Curtis Lewis, chairman, Sara Hightower Regional Library Board of Trustees, said if Rockmart receives the money, the local share would be about $775,750 with the total project cost estimated at $2,674,250.

Lewis was delighted to receive the “good news” and expressed thanks to each person who had de-voted time to get this goal accomplished.

“We (local and state offi-cials) have been working on this project for several years,” he said. “We have a lot of support to see our plans become a reality. If all goes well, we could re-ceive funds before the end of 2009.”

The new library, which would increase the size of the existing library from about 5,500 to about 17,000 square feet, will be located in the old RHS Vocational Building (Civic Complex).

I am thrilled at the expansion. Our library now could do so much more if it had more space. Just think how great it will be when it opens! The only question I have is this: Why will it take over $2.6 million to build, especially since it's going in an existing building?

Don't get me wrong; I'm thankful we're getting a new library!

Congratulations to our sister library over in Rockmart. This building project will benefit all of the citizens in Polk County. Stop by your local libraries in Rockmart and Cedartown and checkout what services are offered. Escape the stresses of your day and enjoy free books and movies, use computers or free wi-Fi to search for jobs or update resumes, research your ancestry, or take your child to a free Storytime. We have something for everyone!
