A Cedartown teenager was arrested as a suspect in an incident that left a child severely injured Wednesday, according to police.

Deion Sanders, 17, of Martielle Street, Cedartown, was arrested after an investigation by Cedartown police lead to a criminal warrant against him. Sanders is charged with aggravated assault, according to Cedartown Assistant Police Chief Jamie Newsome.

Newsome said the child, who is not being named, was airlifted to an Atlanta hospital Wednesday with serious head injuries. Officials on the scene of the lifeflight said the child was 9 months old.

Cedartown detectives went to Atlanta, talked with hospital doctors and the child's mother and were able to gather enough evidence to make an arrest, he said.
