A former Rome police officer facing several drug charges in Rome is also facing charges in Polk County, according to jail records.

Ambar Monica Velazquez, 32, of 15 Elizabeth St., was arrested on Monday evening on charges of felony possession of methamphetamine, felony possession of a Schedule III, IV or V controlled substance with the intent to distribute, felony possession of a Schedule I or II controlled substance with the intent to distribute, felony possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, felony possession of a Schedule II controlled substance and a probation violation.

Chief Deputy Tom Caldwell said Velazquez was moved to the Polk County Jail for her protection, since she was a former police officer.

When Velazquez arrived at the Polk jail, “we were told that they did a search of her and they found 90 Xanex (pills) in her shoe,” Caldwell said.

Polk County jail officials did not comment, referring questions to a lieutenant who would not be back in until today.

According to online Polk County Jail records, Velazquez is charged in Polk County with possession of Schedule IV drugs, possession of

Schedule IV drugs with the intent to distribute, possession of drugs across the guard line, all felonies, and a misdemeanor charge of failure to keep drugs in their original container.

When she was arrested Monday evening, Velazquez was found with Xanex, Oxycodone and a glass smoking device with methamphetamine residue while at a motel on Martha Berry Highway.

Velazquez also had a ledger that showed drug sales, the report stated.

She also was arrested last month on a charge of theft by taking and drug possession for stealing 500 Xanex from a local pharmacy where she was working.

She was fired from the Rome Police Department in 2011 for having a

relationship with a known felon.

She pleaded guilty last year to misdemeanor theft by taking for not turning in her uniform and ticket books from the Rome Police Department and was on probation for that charge.

She is being held without bond.
