A collision with a school bus Monday afternoon on Highway 278 sends a woman to the hospital but leaves the 24 children on the bus uninjured.

According to Buddy Har-rison, director of social services for the Polk County School System, bus 21-06 was transporting children from Eastside Elementary School in Rockmart home when the driver stopped at the railroad tracks on Highway 278 near the Bo Jangles restaurant. Stop-ping at all crossings is stan-dard protocol for school bus drivers.

“The driver of the car apparently lost concentra-tion or wasn’t paying atten-tion and hit the back of the bus,” Harrison said.

The woman, who remains unidentified, was taken by ambulance to Floyd Medi-cal Center in Rome.

The children were trans-ferred to another bus with Eastside Principal Mark Lumpkin and other school officials on hand to oversee the transfer.

my child was sitting where ms gaston hit the bus and ended up hurt.... muscle sprains... treated and released at fmc monday night. she is to be rechecked later this week. she also had a severe asthmas attack during the collision and was transported back to the school by a paraprofessional and family friend. we would like to thank everyone for their prayers and calls. it was a scary situation for us since she suffers from a heart condition and seizures, along with other medical conditions.

I would like to thank everyone who has called or came by to express their concern for my child who was injured on the bus wreck. I would also like to thank the family friend and paraprofessional who escorted my child back to the school so that we could transport her to the hospital. My daughter is still suffering from the wreck and has not improved much. She will be seen again Monday if no better. THANK YOU AGAIN!
