The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Georgia Tech University was awarded the money as part of an overall $130 million U.S. Department of Energy program. Federal officials are using the money to fund 66 research projects across the country.
Georgia Tech plans to use the money to focus on three projects.
Researchers plan to develop a new method to capture wind energy that may be 25 percent cheaper than the more conventional method and 60 percent cheaper than solar power.
The funding will also be used to develop a high-efficiency solar reactor to produce solar fuel.
Georgia Tech will also develop a supercapacitator, which is a high-efficiency, low-cost energy storage device.
