The tree is being decorated in preparation for the Thursday, Nov. 29 Christmas tree lighting. The event will take place at the Polk County Courthouse No. 2.
Hundreds of ornaments and lights will adorn this year’s tree, which was selected and cut from J&M Christmas Tree Farm in Tallapoosa on Monday by employees of the city’s street department.
The Covenant Christian School Children’s Choir and the Cedartown High School Band will perform Christmas carols at 6 p.m. and the lighting will be held at 7 p.m.
Santa Claus and Keila’s Photo Lab will be available for picture opportunities for children from 6 until 7:30 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. Ramona Ruark of the Downtown Cedartown Association said the section of Main Street between Sterling Holloway Place to Sycamore Street will be closed from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. for the event.
Ruark said 500 new ornaments and 10 Christmas banners had been purchased for this year’s ceremony. The 2012 Cedartown Christmas parade is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m. with a rain date of Friday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m.
This year’s theme is “The Sights and Sounds of Christmas.”
The grand marshal will be Austin Kines, the oldest living prisoner of war in Polk County. Kines was a prisoner during World War II in Germany.
There will be three divisions for this year’s float contest: church division, open division and most outstanding division.
The first place prize for each division is $500. The church and open divisions will have second place prizes of $300 and third place prizes of $200.
Those interested can pick up an application at the Cedartown City Hall or online at www.cedartownga.gov. The deadline to enter a float is Dec. 3. Participants are asked not to throw candy or have a Santa Claus on their floats to avoid confusing children.
The parade route will be from Marietta Street to the Badcock furniture parking lot behind Wendy’s on North Main Street.
